Sansui 9090DB damaged by counterfeit parts!
A large customer of mine went through two techs before sending this 9090DB to me in hopes of getting a faster and cheaper repair. The last two techs used fake parts and improper service techniques so now it's in my shop anyway...and with more damage a bigger bill than if he'd just had it done right the first time!
Worse still, the fault shown could have even caused a fire.
All sorts of parts are being counterfeit these days but few are targeted for fakery quite like discontinued audio power transistors due to their high value and scarcity.
ALWAYS buy from manufacturer authorized distributors and if the original is out of production and is only available from a grey market like eBay or Ali...

Fixing common issues on the Sony DA-555ES Receiver

Our old "friends" heat and metal fatigue are up to their dastardly deeds as usual, this time in my late mother's Sony DA-555ES! In this video, you'll see what issues I encountered and I also discuss why a nearly 20 year old A/V receiver can still be relevant in today's 4K HD world.
Troubleshooting Tip - Behold the wonders of Freeze Spray!
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.6 лет назад
This video illustrates how quickly you can locate a thermally intermittent fault using R134A in a can, commonly called "freeze spray" or "component cooler". In this case, I had a Marantz 2325 with an intermittent short in the signal path after a brief period of warming up. Spraying the suspect part restored the unit to nearly proper operation for a short time, thus confirming the faulty part. O...

    Great Video ! My father and I took 2 weeks to built one of these from a kit in 1968, and paired it with the AR-2AX speakers and a Dual 1019 Turntable. I still have an emotional connection to the look and sound. About 10 years ago bought a spare for $10, and then found 2 more AJ-15's( the tuner) with cabinets. It is on my bucket list to get one of the A5-15's to work. Both tuners work fine. I'm surprised that you didn't open the little silver front panel to adjust the stereo phasing.-- remember how odd it was that that the stereo subcarrier was not locked. In the day, the AR-15 was at the top of the heap ! and affordable by comparison if you built it from the kit -- Thanks for doing this young student a favor I It's super vintage and he/she should have fun with it !

    • @MadScientistsLair
      @MadScientistsLair 4 месяца назад

      I tried playing with that off camera but it still wouldn't lock. The tuner likely needed a more extensive service and they really didn't want to invest in it since most Dallas radio stations basically play the same 20 songs on a loop. Alignments and even used tuners are a tough sell to people my age and younger and we can blame the consolidation of the media industry for that. Just look at the entry level hi-fi market to get a glimpse of what younger folks want in a stereo...you'll be practically tripping over a cargo ships' worth of integrated amps but only a few stereo only receivers are still made and none are from the new Chinese entrants to the market like Topping or SMSL.

      It probably has bad solder joints. If you've never done this kind of repair, I would advise against DIY repair. An expert makes soldering look easy because to them, it is. Keep that in mind when you watch videos and get some practice elsewhere before working on gear you actually like. Also do keep in mind that improper service procedures could cause hazardous conditions that include a risk of fire or electric shock.

    I have a DA50ES which looks to be very similar to that 555ES, on it's power board there's a cap that's by itself, it sits next to the two bridge rectifiers, when the cap is in circuit, the voltage is about 18volts, it's higher than the cap is rated for, when I take the cap out of circuit the voltage drops to about 12 volts, it's a very odd thing.

    • @MadScientistsLair
      @MadScientistsLair 6 месяцев назад

      That sounds like filter caps doing their job. The filtered DC voltage with light loads becomes near the peak of the pulsating DC from the rectifier. Now, the question is why is it high...For that, you're going to need to figure out. Id suspect abnormal line voltage but it could be a shorted upstream semiconductor as well. Resistors failing low are rare but I have seen if a few times.

    A reputable hifi service people drive >100km to rejected to restore my QRX-6500, they say they can´t repair it in a reputable manner. Is it because they are cherry picking? Apparently 50-60 small signal transistors´s legs in the NF section are faulty due to being exposed to the hot glue for too long. The faults are a hiss coupled with music signal and stereo radio hiss despite enough signal strength.

    • @MadScientistsLair
      @MadScientistsLair 8 месяцев назад

      They're cherry picking because it will occupy their workbench for too long AND they know you won't like the bill for all of those failure prone transistors to be changed out. The tuner also needs to be realigned after such extensive work and this shop may or may not have the facilities for that. I have a separate queue for rebuild/major restoration work, and I work that queue between more typical repairs. This is why the restoration turnaround time is so long at my lab and others that operate similarly. This separate queue keeps costs down because you don't get charged for the opportunity cost of all the simple repairs I'd have to reject if your restoration job occupied my bench for a week straight. It's not just glue. The small signal transistors in these units are just rubbish and get noisy with age. They're not 2SC458 bad but they're a close second.

Paying to have one restored is expensive, but you’ll end up with a receiver that will motor on for another 50 years. Plus it is an extremely cool looking machine that puts the modern plastic disposable junk to shame.

    Cool video. My dad has this amp still to this day (1992). It sounds great but I’m not surprised there’s evidence of heat inside. A huge design flaw is the cooling fan in the back is not regulated by temperature but volume. If you play music loudly the fan kicks on and keeps the components cool. If you play at low volume the unit just gets hotter and hotter. There were times I’d touch the top and burn my finger if it was playing Christmas Eve music in the background during a family party all day, for example. His A speaker terminal doesn’t work. So he uses the B terminal. Eventually it’ll probably go out as well. Thanks for posting, very informative.

    If i replace them with MG21195 and 196, do I have to make adjustments like biasing or change some resistors ? Thanks.

      You'll need to perform the bias adjustment procedure as described in the service manual. No component swaps are required.
